関係代名詞 探訪 : discussion on relative pronoun

ここんとこ、行き帰りの電車で以下の本を読んでいる。

「Guide to Weather」（Ross Reynolds, Fiery book, 2005)

サイエンス系の洋書を読んでると、よく 前置詞＋which の形式で関係代名詞を見かける。
あれは、話し言葉の中で、ネイティブスピーカーはスルっと頭のなかからでてくるもんなんだろうか。。。

英語を勉強しはじめて何年もたつが、
僕の脳みその中の造話機が、そういう表現を出してくることは、なかなかない。

ラテン語系列の後置修飾する形容詞（たとえば、スペイン語の Casa Blanca; 白い家）
は、名詞に重きを置いてしゃべってたら、なんとなく、形容詞が後出しになるのはしっくりくる。

前述の 「前置詞＋which」の場合、たいていのケースで where に置き換え可能なんで、
普段の会話の中では where を使うネイティブスピーカーが大半なんじゃないかなぁと思ってしまう。

前置きが長くなったが、上で提示した書籍では、以下の表現がでてくる。

例文１：
All cloud droplets have a nucleus around which they have condensed -- known as the cloud condensation nucleus (CCN).

例文２：
The scattered cumulus have a clear subcloud layer, where the unsaturated bubbles are ascending, and a cloudbase that marks the level at which they become saturated.

例文３：
The height to which a cumulus cloud grows depends partly on the moisture content of the bubble - that is, how much heating is available from condensation and, therefore, how buoyant it will be.

例文４：
Such differences may be related to changes in the intensity of surface heating, or to the way in which the environmental lapse rate varies from place to place.

みてのとおり、いずれも where に置き換えたら、たいてい通じるのかと。。。

ぼくが、まじめに科学洋書を読み始めた 20代後半で初めて見かけたのは

「Biogeochemistry ; An analysis of Global Change」（William H. Schlesinger, Academic Press, 1997, second edition)
...その当時の僕のバイブル。

という書籍の中で、以下の表現がある。

The ultimate goal of biogeochemistry is to understand the processes controlling the chemical environment in which we live.

この場合、後置修飾の語数が少ないからすんなり読める。

また、以下のような記述もある。

In unpolluted atmospheres, all these reactions consume OH. In "dirty" atmospheres, a different set of reactions pertains, in which there can be a net production of O3, and thus OH.

この場合、関係代名詞の前にカンマがあるので、
厳密には、上述のケースたちと用法は違うと思う（遠い昔の高校生時代ぐらいに、授業で言ってたような、言ってなかったような。。。）。

で、この場合、 in which を where に差し替えた場合、

, where there can be a net ...

という具合に、発音上のゴロが悪くなる。たぶん。
ネイティブはそういうのも、無意識に考えてるのかなぁ。。。

そんな、こんなの 文法表現に心がひっかかるので、
また、工業英検受けよっかなぁ。。。
（去年、２級までは受かったが、１級を逃す。。。）

１級の問題、今思えば、たいして難しい単語でてこなかったし
（１級は「辞書を持ち込み可」の試験だが、必要ないのでは？）、
対策まじめにやって、受けよっかな。。。
